Sgt. Fury and his Howlingos is a comic book series developed by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, published by Marvel Comics from 1963 to 1981. Protagonist, Sgt. Nick Fury eventually became the head of Marvel's super-spy organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. They also introduced the Howling Commandos, a fictional World War II unit that made its debut in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Command #1 (cover dated May 1963). Stan Lee mentioned that the creation of Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos stemmed from a wager with his publisher, Martin Goodman, claiming that the Lee-Kirby style could sell a book even with the most ridiculous title he could think of.
