John was shot down over Northern France. He was badly burned and for over two months was on the run from the Gestapo, helped by the French Resistance.
Eventually, he made it to Gibraltar and then to Scotland.
He was with the 65 [East India] squadron and then to Algeria to ferry new Spitfires and Hurricanes to the frontline support of the Eighth Army.
