Spitfire Into War (1986) By Air Vice Marshal Sandy Johnstone CB DFC AE

During the critical time of the Battle of Britain, Sandy Johnstone was in command of 602 Squadron at Westhampnett, Tangmere's satellite station. While stationed in Scotland, this famous Auxiliary City of Glasgow Squadron shot down the first enemy aircraft on British soil; it was involved in the Norwegian evacuation and moved south for the Battle of Britain.

This vivid and readable book recreates the tense, dramatic action of those crucial days, but also of the daily life of the fighter pilots during the period when life was lived from hour to hour. Sandy Johnstone tells of the exploits of such famous figures as Archie McKellar, Dunlop Urie and Findlay Boyd -and also gives an insider's account of the unorthodox arrival of Rudolf Hess in Scotland.
