Political and Social Thought in the Contemporary Middle East (1968) By Kemal H. Karpat

Kemal Karpat, the volume's editor, provides an exceedingly comprehensive summary of modern Middle Eastern political and social thought, breaking down the contents into an analysis of writings from Iran, the Arab states (including a separate treatment of the Palestinians), Israel and Turkey. There is a long general introduction to the volume, with additional analytical introductions to each section. Although long, and written in a thoroughly "adult" fashion-this book was put together, not for today's book-shy undergrads, but for an emotionally adult and alert reading audience, who would use its contents as a necessary reference for a professional career in the region-the volume is ultimately quite rewarding for enabling one to understand the origin of and history of modern social and political thought in the Middle East.
