The companion book to the author's book on the fall of Singapore. Americans are taught that December 1941 was the story of Pearl Harbor, and not much else. In that same month, the Germans were defeated at Moscow, the Japanese took Wake Island and invaded Sumatra, Malaya and the Philippines and sank two British battle cruisers. And during that month they swarmed over Hong Kong, pushing survivors back across the island, the last outpost being the old Repulse Bay Hotel on the south side. Churchill refused their request to be permitted to surrender, even though there was no hope; Churchill replied that each day they held out would be a basis for "the lasting honor" accorded them by the rest of the British Empire. This is great drama, history and a sad tale of the horror of war on civilian populations.
