Masefield's account of the disastrous amphibious landings and action of the Dardanelles Campaign, in which the Allies failed in their attempt to capture the Ottomon capital Constantinople, thus securing a safe naval route to Russia. The heavy fighting which took place over eight months from April 1915-January 1916 was the first major involvement in the war by the nations of Australia and New Zealand.
