B-26 Marauder At War (1978, 1991) By Roger A. Freeman

' ...I always marveled at the strength of those main struts, for the B-26 never, never bounced. And, as happened more than once, the tyres sometimes exploded on impact and you just knew that was a really hard landing. Once, I even survived a landing standing between the pilot's and co-pilot's seats. For a moment I thought I was going out the windshield and would beat the aircraft to the end of the strip. But the expression of controlled terror on the pilot's face told me I must never again accept a landing so casually. The usual position of every crewman on the approach was hunched tightly against a bulkhead with a parachute pack to ease the expected impact against your head. On every subsequent landing, I was usually first in position. B-26 Pilot's Account (p. 24)

The following articles view the Marauder in all environments: Ops from Port Moresby (New Guinea), North African sandstorms, convoy attack at sea, low-level to Ijmuiden (Holland), or their bridge busting during the campaign across Europe. There are pictures of formations captioned with the mission and participants, the targets, and damaged B-26s back at base. Flak suits and steel helmets were necessities at the altitudes they flew.

And wow! the punishment those planes endured! check pages 171-5 for Marauders with huge pieces of aluminum peeled away, hanging loose, or missing control surfaces. See the story of 'Swamp Chicken' on p. 85, which had an entire engine shot AWAY and whose pilot still managed a crash landing- at 160 mph- and lived.
