Dorling served in the Royal Navy during World War One and Two, with his experiences at this time giving major influence to his novels. This particular work is dedicated to everyone Dorling served with, commencing with The Song of the Navy. A Little Ship is set during the First World War, following the journey of the ship and the adventures and people on board. This work is illustrated with vignettes throughout by H. R. J.
